Dances with Dirt 50k has been my Rasputin, my nemesis, since joining ultra-races in 2017. 

And I was finally going to exercise the demons! 

It was an A+ race. 

Preparation, training, pacing, hydration, nutrition, and battling nasty elements were spot on. And it was a mudder’ of a race. Thunderstorms early and often left the course even muddier than normal.

And then I missed a turn!

With about 5 miles to go and out of the woods, there is a slight right turn one has to make and I was deep in conversation with my new mate, Reese, on the course, and simply missed it.

With cars going by and seeing some campers, I just didn’t see it. 

We were a 1.5 miles in before seeing the error.

And it cost me. 

I ran a total of 34 miles instead of 31.

However, in every bad situation, some good will come out of it.

When you make a wrong turn in life. You have to readjust and RALLY.

And a RALLY always involves other people!

I developed new friendship as Reese and I talked about faith for most of our time coming in. It made it worth it.

Another lesson learned, if you can’t be happy with the race you wanted, be happy with the race you had…
