Mental coaching is dependent upon the leadership!
In a sort of “office space” movie type inquiry, people frequently ask, “what is it that you do here?” Providing Mental Skills Coaching to a team is vastly different than individual 1-1 coaching.
Yes, There are few times that I provide the “motivational speech.” But, aside from Matt Foley (Chris Farley) who lives in a van by the river, motivational speaking just doesn’t have a lasting impact! My talks with the team were very specific and targeted to address a specific need and mental skill.
However, besides of being in front of the team to address specific mental skills, most of my work is behind the scenes and on the back-end. Mental coaching with a team involves collective debriefs, relationship dynamics, communication amongst peers and coaches, vision, leadership, confidence, and maintaining a focus on the process as opposed to the outcome.
But, none of it is possible without the head coach or leader of organization!
Head coaches and leaders are the one’s who supply the time and space to allow me to work on these mental skills. If they don’t provide the ownership, then it simply won’t work!
Head coaches and leaders are ESSENTIAL to effective making mental skills training.
That is why I insisted before doing an interview, that the author mention the head coach in the article MORE than me. (check it out)
