Jim Marshall played Defensive end for the Minnesota Vikings and was part of the Purple People Eaters, which was the moniker of their vaunted defense.

He recovered 28 fumbles during his 20 year career.

However, it was one recovered fumble that became infamous.

During a game vs. the 49ers, he recovered the fumble and ran it the WRONG WAY to the end zone, and threw it out-of-bounds for a safety.

It was one of the most unusual plays in NFL history and a gaffe for sure…

However, It’s NOT about the setback, it’s about the comeback!

The next drive, he sacked the quarterback and forced a fumble which his teammate picked up and ran it in for a game winning touchdown.

People would approach Jim Marshall for years after and commend him on persevering through that play and still playing up to his full potential.

I ask people if they have ever “stubbed their toe”, or “bit their own tongue”. I think his mistake allowed others, in some fashion, to own up to their own misgivings, because his mistake was for all to see and he was able to overcome, so why not they?

Remember, no matter how you mess up, it’s not about the setback, it’s about the comeback!
