Hey {{first_name| Friend}}
Last week’s Puke & Rally newsletter, you saw this idea:
👉 Want more success? Help someone else.
The most prosocial people, the ones who consistently help others, tend to win more over time.
If you help others, you’ll reach your goals.
There’s tension to that.
A recent study in Science examined how people respond to feedback during conflict. Researchers analyzed over 11,000 prompts across 11 AI systems and ran experiments with 2,400 participants, comparing responses that affirmed behavior versus ones that challenged it.
The results were clear.
When people were affirmed by AI, they became more convinced they were right.
At the same time, they were less willing to take responsibility, less likely to apologize, and less likely to repair the relationship.
They also preferred those responses. (shocker)
They were affirmed by responding with agreement like, “You handled that the right way,” instead of asking a question, “What might the other person have experienced in that situation?”
The same feedback from AI that felt supportive reduced prosocial behavior.
That is the danger.
Prosocial behavior requires perspective. And AI is removing it. Slowly…
Perspective requires the ability to step outside your own view and consider someone else’s experience. That does not happen automatically. It requires friction.
It requires being challenged.
When that friction is removed, perspective goes with it.
If everything reinforces your current position, your certainty increases, but your awareness decreases.
The earlier research showed that helping others leads to long-term success. This research shows why that is difficult.
