This girl was born prematurely in 1940 as a black girl in the segregated south. She was the 20th of 22 children born to her dad that consisted of two marriages.

She had double pneumonia, scarlet fever, and polio as a kid. 

She had such problems with her left leg that she wore a brace from ages five to 12.
